“Vi, don’t worry,” assured Leanna, “We’ll be fine. It’s just crossing a few areas. How bad can that be?”

Violet, Leanna, and Aurelia were in their bunk room as Leanna and Aurelia organized their packs.

“Do you think you’re ready? Why do they want you to go? You guys haven’t been training all that long. Aren’t there an infinite number of other worlds? There must be other training Warriors. If this is so important and affects the governing of the Council and their principles, why are they sending you?” Violet was sitting on Leanna’s bed, rocking on her heels again. She had been doing a lot of rocking since her Sensor training began, but the frequency was increasing. Livia had told Leanna that being a Sensor involves a tremendous amount of emotional absorption and the emotions that came across could, at times, feel louder than a Sensor’s own, swirling, chaotic. “Like screaming even,” she had said. A Sensor must adjust to that.

Aurelia sat down next to Violet and gave her a friendly hug. “Don’t worry, it will be fine. Did you see how strong we’re all getting? The martial arts, the training. I never imagined I’d be able to do any of that. I mean, have you seen your sister working with a bo staff or going for a blood choke? She’s amazing.”

“I know. I know. I just . . . I wish I wasn’t staying here. I wish I could go with you.”

Leanna thought about Violet when she was younger. How her little hand was always grasping at Leanna’s. “I know you don’t like to be away from me. I don’t like to be away from you either. But you’ll be fine. Livia will be here, Lieutenant Gyan will be here.” Leanna hoped Violet and Aurelia didn’t hear the slight quiver in her voice when she said his name.

But Violet kept rocking. “I know, it’s just that, well, I’ve told you guys, I mean, I like Livia, I just, something about us doesn’t always match correctly. I don’t understand why my abilities are so dull around her.”

“You’re right,” agreed Leanna. “If I’m getting along with someone and you’re not, surely this world is upside-down.” Leanna threw a shirt at Violet and it landed on her head. “Maybe you’re just not used to not mastering something right away. That whole Visiting thing. I mean, has she ever been unkind to you?”

“No,” murmured Violet, chewing on her thumbnail, brows knit. “I guess, maybe you’re right. I’m sure you’re right. It’s fine. Why wouldn’t it be?”
